What the hell are we doing?

That is the question I have been asking myself lately.

Last month Adam and I both left our jobs with the intention of striking out as self-employed purveyors of stuff. We had been working for other people for (too) many years and, after a pretty crappy twelve months of professional and personal experiences, now felt like the right time to shake things up. So we gave out notices and set to planning our way to global retail domination.

Mid-life crises be damned, we were going to have a mid-life renaissance!

Learning from experience

This isn't the first time we have tried self-employment. Adam has been an antiques and collectibles trader and a company director/store owner in the past. He credits his mum for teaching him about the ins-and-outs of the market trade, and his dad for giving invaluable business advice.

Several years ago I took voluntary redundancy and had a go at jewellery making and being a practicing artist, with some success, but not enough to sustain a career or feed the kids.

​Doing it together

Adam and I have worked for large corporations and independant traders, SME's and large institutions, and quite often together (we actually met at work). After twenty-six years of marriage we know each other pretty well, including our strengths and weaknesses.
We've survived redundancies, a failed business, mental health crises, and everything else life has dared to throw at us
​This time we are taking control.
